    He learned to pot from his uncle Macario Ortiz, artist who started to apply graphite on his pieces to get a striking metallic sheen and he learned very well.

    His multicolor designs showing iguanas, fishes, birds and other animals interlocked with pre-columbian forms are masterly painted on the shinny surface.  His very elegant  cylinder shaped pieces are a most have piece in all the important collections of Mata Ortiz pottery.
