Carlos Loya was awarded 1st place in the 2004 Concurso de Ceramica Mata Ortiz in the white polychrome category.
In the early 1980’s, Carlos learned a great deal of the art of Mata Ortiz pottery making from the Quezada family. He only took up pottery making again seriously a few years ago. In 2003 he won the galardon (the best of the show) in the concurso, an annual contest among all the Mata Ortiz potters judged by an independent panel of Mexicans and Americans. At the 2004 contest he won first place for the best white and mimbres style pot. In 2006 he won a $1,000 prize. In 2005 he won the first prize for the best clay pot at the Concurso Nacional Gran Premio de Arte Popular, a nationwide contest. Carlos was invited to display his works at an exhibit in Germany in 2006.
This bowl and its beautiful stand have a great amount of fine painting, and like most of Carlos works, the overall design is simple, modern, and elegant. It is nicely finished inside as well as outside. This is truly a very unique and exhibition piece of art. The piece was personally delivered to Galeria de Ollas.
